Hi Tamara, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your shop?
I am a thirty-something creative soul who has found her place in jewelry making. I have been an artist all of my life, but my love for creating jewelry sparked when I ran across an estate sale and spotted a tub full of vintage tins. They had been sitting out in the rain all night, but they were beautiful and I had to have them all (there were dozens). I brought them all home and had no idea what I planned to do with all of these tins. Eventually it occurred to me to make jewelry out of them. Slowly but surely my jewelry making evolved and began to include other materials. Today it is my favorite form of expression.
How did you first become interested in your craft?
I’ve always been interested in making jewelry. I think it comes naturally to any artist to want to experiment in other fields. Years ago I tried my hand at polymer clay and made cute little food earrings. However, my ultimate goal was to make something I would want to wear. I’ve finally accomplished that!
Can you describe your creative process?
When I make jewelry I like to listen to good music and I just get into a vibe. I always have pieces of tin or leather cut out and ready to begin. I come up with some more creative pieces at night and like to experiment with new ideas all the time. Ideas come to me at night when I am watching TV for some reason. I keep a little moleskin notebook by me and doodle out the ideas for later. When I am not feeling particularly creative it is a good time to cut out pieces or sand tin. I create mostly during the day, but I have been known to have a little jewelry making session at night every now and then.
Apart from creating jewelry, what do you enjoy doing?
Aside from jewelry making I love photography, painting, and digital art. When I am not creating I love to go hiking or play with my son. I also enjoy experimenting in the kitchen. My husband and I love to travel. We’ve been on two cross country trips to Washington this year and we bought an Airstream on the second trip to facilitate more travel.
